Velvet fabric is one of the most appreciated products on the market: it is highly durable, warm, soft, and often, when combined with materials like gold and metal, it becomes a symbol of wealth and preciousness.

Its main characteristic is to have a shaved and very dense pile (in this case, it is called smooth or cut velvet) or a series of small loops of thread that protrude from the weave (curly velvet).
Traditionally, silk was chosen as the fiber for its production, making it particularly shiny and soft to the touch. Later on, cotton, linen, wool, and mohair were introduced, making the fabric less luxurious but more durable. Recently, synthetic velvets have also been developed (especially in polyester, acetate, nylon, and viscose).
